Sounds of Victory

During World War II, Steinway & Sons built ruggedized pianos for the government. These Victory Vertical pianos, as they came to be known, were distributed around the world on ships, in jeeps and reputedly by parachute from airplanes. Music boosted soldier morale and was a priority for the Allies during the war. The pianos supported music among the troops, USO shows and military dance bands. Sounds of Victory is a documentary film project about these G.I. pianos and examines music from the era and its ability to affect emotions and boost morale in the most trying of times.
